“I have had the pleasure of working with Finnish musicians on several projects for a decade now and during the covid pandemic, I had the opportunity to really concentrate on the new tunages that have been brewing in my mind. I have a small demo studio in Finland and together with my trusted studio engineer and multi-instrumentalist, Harri Väyrynen, I was able to give shape to the material. One of the first songs we worked on was the single, ‘Whatcha Doin?’ After the demo was recorded, a brilliant trumpet player, Antero Priha happened to be visiting the studio and I thought it might be cool to add some brass to the track. I haven’t used brass in my recordings since my solo album Making it on the Street in 1977, so it was a high time to revisit those sounds. However, what really brings the song home are the superb vocals of the multi-talented Maria Hänninen (of Mount Mary). I’ve known Maria for years and shared a stage with her for the first time in February 2019. I was thrilled that Maria jumped on the opportunity to participate in the recordings, and you will be hearing more of her vocals (and guitar and violin) on the other tracks too. Conny Bloom’s (of Electric Boys) sublime guitar work provided the icing on the cake. I haven’t met Conny since the beginning of the millennium when he joined Mountain for a few songs on a cruise out of Stockholm, Sweden, but I’ve followed his career and Maria has kept in touch with him more frequently. It’s wonderful collaborating with Conny on this project. Like, Maria, Conny will be featured on several of the tracks. The final mixes of the single were done by the masterful Petri Majuri. Petri (of E-Studio, Finland) will be the main studio engineer for the rest of the album. Hope you enjoy ‘Whatcha Doin?’ There’s much more to come later this year!”
